Before this trip, KC and I decided to not purchase traditional climbing gear to use on this trip due to my inexperience with the gear (I’m the “rope gun”, climber jargon for the person who sets up the rope). This limits us to climbing either top rope (where you set up the climb from the top) or sport climb (place quick draws in bolts along the route and place the rope in the quick draws while you climb). We soon found out, both at Smith Rocks and City of Rocks, that the older climbing areas are trad climbs only (no bolts, you have to place your protection as you go). This limited the amount of climbing we could do at either location.
